What Is a Pup Joint?

A pup joint is a short section of pipe, usually threaded on both ends, used to adjust the total length of a tubular string or to connect two pieces of equipment that don't line up using standard-length joints. Pup joints are common in casing, tubing, and drill pipe strings, as well as in surface piping, wellheads, and choke and kill manifolds.

Despite their simple appearance, pup joints are manufactured to the same material, dimensional, and testing requirements as full-length pipe — they are not a lower-spec substitute, and using an uncertified pup joint in a pressure-critical string is a common and avoidable failure point.

Common Types of Pup Joints

 Tubing pup joints — used to fine-tune the landing depth of production tubing strings

 Casing pup joints — used to adjust casing string length or position couplings away from critical wellbore zones

 Drill pipe pup joints — short sections used to change bottom-hole assembly spacing

 Hammer union / flanged pup joints — short pipe sections with hammer union or flange ends for surface iron and manifold piping

Material Grades

Pup joints are produced in the same steel grades as the parent casing or tubing string to ensure compatible strength and corrosion resistance, including common API 5CT grades such as J55, K55, N80, L80, P110, and higher-strength or sour-service grades on request. Material selection should always match the grade of the adjoining pipe unless a specific engineering reason dictates otherwise.

How Pup Joints Differ From Regular Pipe Joints

 Shorter length — typically 2 to 12 feet versus 30+ feet for standard range pipe

 Both ends are usually threaded (box and pin), since pup joints connect into an existing string on both sides

 Tighter dimensional tolerance is often specified, since pup joints are frequently used for precise depth or spacing adjustments

 Full API certification and testing still applies — hydrostatic testing, dimensional inspection, and material traceability are not waived for short lengths

When ordering pup joints, specify: nominal size and weight per foot matching the connecting string, thread type and connection (API round thread, buttress, or premium connection), exact length or length tolerance required, steel grade, and any special service requirements (sour service / H2S, low temperature, or high collapse rating). Ordering a small stock assortment of common lengths (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ft) in your primary grade avoids delays when a string needs last-minute adjustment in the field.
