Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating is one of the most widely used anti-corrosion systems for steel pipe in oil and gas, water transmission, and infrastructure projects. This guide explains how FBE coating works, how it is applied, the standards that govern it, and where it performs best — so buyers and engineers can specify it with confidence.
FBE coated pipe is steel pipe protected by a single layer of thermosetting epoxy powder that is electrostatically sprayed onto a preheated pipe surface and fused into a continuous, non-porous film. Once cured, the coating bonds chemically to the steel, creating a barrier that blocks moisture, oxygen, and soil chemicals from reaching the metal — the three ingredients that drive corrosion.
Because FBE is applied as a dry powder rather than a liquid, it produces a uniform, holiday-free (defect-free) film with excellent adhesion, which is why it has become the default internal and external coating for line pipe, water pipe, and rebar around the world.

● Surface preparation: the pipe is abrasive blast-cleaned to a near-white metal finish (typically Sa 2.5) to remove mill scale, rust, and contaminants.
● Preheating: the pipe is heated to 180–240°C (356–464°F) in an induction or gas-fired oven.
● Powder application: epoxy powder is electrostatically sprayed onto the hot pipe surface, where it melts and flows into a continuous film.
● Curing and cooling: the coating cures within seconds on the hot steel, after which the pipe is quenched with water.
● Inspection: thickness, holiday (pinhole) detection, adhesion, and cathodic disbondment testing confirm the coating meets specification before shipment.
● Excellent adhesion to steel, reducing the risk of disbondment under cathodic protection

FBE is most often compared with 2-layer and 3-layer polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) coatings. As a single-layer system, FBE offers strong chemical resistance and adhesion but somewhat lower mechanical/impact resistance than multi-layer PE systems, which add a topcoat specifically for handling and backfill damage resistance. Many pipelines actually use FBE as the primer layer within a 3LPE or 3LPP system, combining FBE's adhesion with PE's mechanical toughness.
